Social Security Earnings Limits
Retroactive to January 1, most social security benefits are no longer reduced for amounts earned by senior citizens. The new law was signed April 7. Under the previous law, Social Security benefits were reduced, for beneficiaries between 65 and 69, by $1 for every $3 of income earned above $17,000 a year. Retirees of age 70 or older had no limits on earnings. The law, however, retains a portion of the existing law for retirees between ages of 62 and 64 who, since they elected early retirement, receive reduced benefits. Those retirees lose $1 in benefits for every $2 they earn over $10,080 a year. The bill previously had passed both the US House and Senate unanimously.
